Apple Watch Dominates Smartwatch Market for Fourth Quarter 2018
Apple Watch continues to be the most popular smartwatch worldwide, comprising half of all smartwatch purchases in 2018.
Global shipments continue to grow for the Apple Watch. In the last quarter of 2018, Apple shipped out 92. million Apple Watch units, up 18 percent from a year prior, according to research from Strategy Analytics. Global shipments increased 56 percent annually. Strategy Analytics reported that Apple Watch captured 51 percent share of a record 18 million smartwatch shipments worldwide in Q4 2018. Samsung, Fitbit and Garmin came in at 2nd, 3rd and 4th.
While Apple Watch is the clear market leader, rivals like Samsung continue to invest in wearables compatible with both Android smartphones and iPhones. Despite selling more Apple Watches, Apple’s global marketshare slipped to 51 percent compared to 67 percent a year prior, indicating the rise of competitors such as Samsung and Fitbit.
While Apple does not report individual unit sales in its fiscal reports, CEO Tim Cook did share in the company’s earnings call this past January that wearables such as the Apple Watch and AirPods were incredibly popular and that the category was "approaching the size of a Fortune 200 company."
